Just as photography freed the painter from realism now video and the rise of social media has freed the photographer from the traditional realistic and literal images to have a more evocative role. With this series of pictures Gollings has broken away from the clarity and perfection of the optical image. His desire is to explore the struggle to make sense of the image. These pictures nostalgically link his first photographs as a teenage photographer on the same Melbourne bayside beaches, whilst embracing a more reductionist approach.
